Caffe Gelato Blog: How to Celebrate Beaujolais Nouveau Day – CG Style!

Beaujolais Nouveau is more than just a fancy French term – it’s also an entire holiday dedicated to wine! Every third Thursday in November, France makes a toast to this magical red wine at the stroke of midnight, and many bars around Europe and North America have taken advantage of its growing popularity. But before you pop open your bottle of Beaujolais, there’s a lot to learn about what makes this wine so unique – and we’ve come up with a few tips and tricks to truly celebrate the holiday!

It’s important to note that Beaujolais Nouveau is only produced in France. Fermented and bottled in a short span of six to eight weeks, the wine is made from special Gamay grapes harvested in the Beaujolais region. Last year, 2,000 producers distributed 27.5 million cases around the world. All of this was to prepare for “Beaujolais Day,” when France would embrace the bright, fruity flavor of the drink and celebrate the end of the harvest. In Lyon, barrels of Beaujolais are rolled down the streets at midnight to get the party started. But don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Beaujolais without being in Europe. We’ve come up with a few ideas on how to celebrate no matter where you are:

  1. Pair a glass with some beef, steak, or lamb. The heavier, spicy tastes pairs well with the bright flavors of Beaujolais.
  2. Save some for Thanksgiving! Beaujolais Nouveau Day and Thanksgiving are only a week apart, and this is a fun wine to pair with a lovely turkey feast. Your family members will be super impressed by your wine knowledge!
  3. Be sure to savor every glass. While this is a dry wine, it packs a variety of fruity flavors in every sip. Don’t overanalyze it – just enjoy it!

Last but certainly not least, be sure to come to Caffe Gelato’s very own Beaujolais Nouveau Wine Dinner on Monday, November 19th! Enjoy a light wine reception followed by a six-course dinner that includes lemon ahi tuna over baby arugula, porcini and garlic roasted beef tenderloin, and mascarpone and fig gelato. And every course is paired with a perfect glass of Beaujolais! The dinner starts at 6:30pm and reservations are $69 per person.
