“It was no surprise that Caffé Gelato was chosen as the venue. Manager Ryan German, also an alliance board member, has showcased a different artist’s work at the cafe every month since it opened. He hopes other Main Street businesses will hop on the bandwagon.”

“So it certainly was a surprise to see on this one fine evening not so long ago a string quartet, poised elegantly out on the sidewalk, smack in the middle of a town known more for poorly over-amplified rock ‘n’ roll than classical interludes. As they passed Caffé Gelato, the wandering Newarkians would pause, listen and maybe even drift inside.”

“Newark needed an ice cream store,” says Ryan German. “How can a street like Main not have a homemade ice cream shop?” For the Newark native, the ice cream business is more than sugar and spice. It’s about hard work and dedication.

” But gelato has a dramatically different appearance. In the display case at Caffe Gelato in Newark – believed to be the First State’s lone “gelato joint” – the stuff resembles cake icing. And the texture is considerably smoother than the cup of strawberry ice cream we sample at the Ben & Jerry’s in the University of Delaware’s Trabant Center.”
